Bokunen Naka

Bokunen Naka, born in 1953 in Izena Island of Okinawa, has taken up Okinawa's nature, its beauties and the dynamic powers to heal and revive, repeatedly as the theme of his woodblock printing. His important works, such as "Banshorensa (The Great Chain of Beings)" series and the design of the commemorative stamp of the Global Warming Conference in 1997, abound with this motif. By adopting "Urate Saishoku", the unique technique of woodblock printing, Bokunen expresses his articles vividly, freely and delicately.
Bokunen starts his works with prayer. Catching an image through praying, he directly carves the image on a block at a stretch usually within several ten minutes. To "fix" an constantly moving image in the nature requires unusual concentration and speed. The "Bankoku Shinryo" series, depicting beautiful scenes of nature and the spirit of Okinawa, are the masterpiece filled with strength and the spirit of the artist.
